Check the Switch

Make sure the ice maker switch is in the ON position and the green indicator is solid (not blinking). A blinking light usually means the module detected a fault.

Look Inside the Tray

Gently touch the ice mold from the top. If there's ice but it won't eject — the ejector motor has failed. If the tray is dry — the water supply is blocked.

Check the RFID Filter

New GE models (Profile, Café) use RFID-chipped filters. If the filter is expired or a third-party filter without a chip is installed, the system may block water flow to the ice maker entirely.

GE French Door ice makers have two common failure patterns. First is the Ice Maker Control Board — located inside the door itself. Condensation gets into the board and it stops sending the signal to the inlet valve. Second is mechanical: the ejector motor or gears strip out and ice locks in the mold.

I carry OEM GE control boards and complete ice maker assemblies. The repair takes about 40 minutes. I also check the inlet valve resistance to rule out a double failure — you don't want to fix the board only to find the valve was leaking too.

Why Your GE Ice Maker Isn't Working — 4 Causes

Precise diagnosis in 10 minutes.

1. Ice Maker Control Board — ~40% of calls

Specific to newer GE French Door models. The board inside the door is exposed to condensation and fails. Requires board replacement — not just a reset.

2. Ice Maker Assembly (Module) — ~30%

Ice forms but won't drop into the bin — stripping gears or a failed ejector motor. We replace the complete module rather than individual gears.

3. Water Inlet Valve — ~20%

One solenoid coil on the dual inlet valve at the rear has burned out. The dispenser may still work fine while the ice maker gets zero water.

4. Frozen Fill Tube — ~10%

A slowly leaking inlet valve drips water that freezes at the fill tube entrance. No water reaches the mold. We thaw the tube and replace the valve.
