Kenmore hums but the drum won't turn?

80% of the time it's a snapped drive belt — a $20 part. Kenmore dryers made after 1995 are built on the Whirlpool or Frigidaire platform. That means affordable OEM belts in stock. If we don't fix it, you don't pay.

Almost always the belt

Snapped drive belt — the most common failure on any Kenmore (110, 417, 796 prefix). $20 Whirlpool- or Frigidaire-platform part.

1,500+ dryers repaired. A drum that won't spin is one of the most common — and least expensive — calls I get.

The tell: motor hums, drum stays still. That's almost always the belt. No sound at all means something upstream — thermal fuse or door switch (see "won't start").

Kenmore note: the first three digits of your model number tell us the actual manufacturer: 110 = Whirlpool, 417 = Frigidaire/Electrolux, 796 = LG. Each uses a different belt. I carry all three.

If the belt snapped on a Kenmore that's 10+ years old — worth replacing the drum rollers at the same time. They share the same assembly, and the machines in OC homes often have 15–20 years of service on them.

How the repair works

From your call to a working dryer — here's exactly what happens

1. Call Us

Describe what's happening. Dmitry asks 2–3 questions and gives you a ballpark price on the spot.

2. Diagnostics + Vent Check

Dmitry tests the element, belt, rollers, motor — and always checks the exhaust duct. A clogged vent is a fire hazard.

3. Approve the Quote

Happy with the price — we fix it. Not happy — you only pay $89 for the diagnostic.

4. Repair + Free Vent Clean

We replace the part, clean the vent at no charge, run a full heat cycle, and show you how to prevent the issue from coming back.

5 reasons the Kenmore drum won't spin

One 5-minute inspection and we know exactly what to replace

1. Snapped drive belt (80%)

Most common. Motor hums, drum sits still — sometimes a rubber loop on the floor. Fixed in 30 minutes. Labor: $80. Part: $20.

2. Worn drum rollers (10%)

Drum sags and stops. Grinding before full stop. Replaced in pairs. Labor: $80. Part: $40.

3. Idler pulley (5%)

Belt tensioner seized or broken — often fails alongside the belt. Labor: $80. Part: $25.

4. Drive motor (3%)

Rare. Motor won't rotate. May hum and stall or go silent. Analyzer reads current. Labor: $120–$180. Part: $120–$250.

5. Door switch (2%)

Complete silence at startup — machine doesn't 'see' a closed door. Labor: $80. Part: $15–$40.

Why we fix your dryer right the first time

The average tech: "not heating — swap the element" ($150). Didn't help. "Then the thermal fuse" ($80). Still nothing. You pay three times. Our analyzer reads amperage on the element, air temp, and vent airflow in 5 minutes. One part, one visit — no guessing.

Sometimes you don't need a technician

Spin the drum by hand

Open the door — does it turn freely? If yes, likely the belt. If it grinds, the rollers are worn.

Do you hear humming?

Hum = motor runs, power transfer is broken (belt/pulley). Silence = motor, switch, or fuse.

Door fully latched?

The door switch must click closed. On Kenmore Series 70/80 models a slightly ajar door prevents startup.

Overloaded?

A very heavy wet load can stall the drum and snap the belt. Try a lighter load before calling.

Questions before you call

Check the first three digits of your model number: 110 = Whirlpool platform (4-ribbed belt), 417 = Frigidaire platform (different length and tension). Both are in stock. Just read me the three digits when you call and I'll confirm before I come.

On a Kenmore that's 10+ years old — yes, I recommend it. The rollers are in the same assembly. Disassembling it a second time a year later costs another $80 in labor. A belt + roller + idler pulley kit is cheaper than two separate visits. On a newer machine I'll call it on-site.

Worn drum rollers — one side more than the other, causing the drum to drop and lurch. Don't ignore it: it will snap the belt and can bend the drum shaft. Roller replacement: $80 + $40.

Most dryer repairs run $120–$220 total (labor + part). The most common issues — belt, rollers, heating element — are $20–$140 for the part and $80 for labor. We quote the exact price before we start, after diagnostics.

Depends on the machine. Here's how Dmitry looks at it:

Dryers are the most repair-friendly appliance out there. Parts are simple and cheap: belt $20, rollers $40, element $80, thermal fuse $15. They last for years — no sensitive electronics dying after three.

Real example: A Whirlpool 22 years old — replaced rollers twice at $40 each. Still runs. A Samsung 5 years old — control board failed, $400 repair. The old one was more reliable.

Exception: motor + board + element all at once on a 15+ year-old machine — we'll do the math together. If the repair exceeds $400 and the dryer is over 12 years old, sometimes a new one makes more sense.

Average repair: $150. New dryer: $700–$1,500 plus wait time. Full breakdown: repair vs. replace →

We're based in Orange. Usually 2–3 hours from your call. 9 out of 10 dryer repairs are done same-day: belts, rollers, heating elements — we carry them in the van.

Yes, if the vent is clogged. Wet lint builds up → overheating → ignition. According to NFPA, roughly 2,900 dryer fires happen in the US every year.

We clean the vent duct free with every repair. If it's been a while — call us, we'll check it. Usually $80–$150 if it's just a cleaning with no repair.

70% of the time — yes, it's a clogged vent or flex hose. The element heats, but humid air can't escape. We check airflow with the analyzer.

The other 30%: moisture sensor or heating element running below capacity. The analyzer shows which one in under 5 minutes.

A handyman does a bit of everything. Appliance repair is its own licensed specialty in California.

We have a diagnostic analyzer for pinpoint accuracy, a van stocked with parts, and direct supplier relationships with Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, and Maytag. A handyman will Google it — we see these failures every day.

$89 — waived when you go ahead with the repair. If we don't fix it, you don't pay. You only pay the diagnostic fee if you decide not to proceed.
