Rhythmic thumping
Rhythmic thumping during spin is typically flat-spotted rollers. Ignore it long enough and the drum shaft gets scored.
Whirlpool dryers are workhorses, but drum support rollers wear out over time. Rhythmic thumping is the classic early sign — catch it now and avoid a bigger repair later. If we don't fix it, you don't pay.

Motor humming, drum frozen = snapped belt. Whirlpool belts are in stock — same-day swap.
We inspect the entire drivetrain: rollers, belt, and idler pulley. If we're already inside, we do everything at once.

Whirlpool Dryer Tech · Orange
Whirlpool dryers are workhorses. In older models the drum rides on two rear rollers and front plastic glides. Newer models use four rollers. The most common complaint: dryer sat unused for a while and the rollers developed flat spots from supporting the drum weight — causing the characteristic thumping when the dryer runs.
Don't wait: Whirlpool can run for months with flat-spotted rollers, but the vibration is transferring stress to the motor and control board. Preventive service now is much cheaper than a motor replacement later.
For Duet and Cabrio owners: these models are more involved to disassemble, but I have the full tool kit for fast access to the drum assembly. No slower than any other Whirlpool on the job.
From your call to a working dryer — here's exactly what happens
Describe what's happening. Dmitry asks 2–3 questions and gives you a ballpark price on the spot.
Dmitry tests the element, belt, rollers, motor — and always checks the exhaust duct. A clogged vent is a fire hazard.
Happy with the price — we fix it. Not happy — you only pay $89 for the diagnostic.
We replace the part, clean the vent at no charge, run a full heat cycle, and show you how to prevent the issue from coming back.
Common Whirlpool drum failures — identified and fixed in one visit
Source of thumping and vibration. Whirlpool rollers are durable rubber, but they wear flat or seize over time. Replaced in pairs. Labor: $80. Part: $40.
Drum won't move at all — motor humming. We use OEM Whirlpool reinforced belts. Labor: $80. Part: $20.
Often starts squealing before it seizes completely. When it goes, the belt has no tension and the drum stops. Labor: $80. Part: $25.
Some Whirlpool models use front plastic glides instead of rollers. Worn glides = metal-on-metal scraping at the front. Labor: $80. Part: $20–$35.
Motor hums and can't turn the drum — overheating or lint buildup in the motor. Analyzer shows amperage draw. Labor: $120–$180.
The average tech: "not heating — swap the element" ($150). Didn't help. "Then the thermal fuse" ($80). Still nothing. You pay three times. Our analyzer reads amperage on the element, air temp, and vent airflow in 5 minutes. One part, one visit — no guessing.

Try these before calling
Try turning the empty drum by hand. Spins completely freely? Belt is broken. Grinds and catches? Rollers or glides.
Press Start. If you hear humming but no drum movement — motor is working, problem is mechanical (belt/rollers).
Whirlpool's door switch is sensitive. Make sure clothing isn't blocking the door — even a slight gap prevents the switch from registering.
Unplug the Whirlpool for 5 minutes and try again. Control board occasionally needs a hard reset to clear a false fault.
Check the symptoms you're seeing to find the likely cause and repair cost
Probable cause: belt, rollers, or thermal fuse. Repair: $100–$180, 30–45 minutes.
Probable cause: heating element + clogged vent, or moisture sensor. Repair: $120–$220, 30–60 minutes.
Multiple symptoms + burning smell — possible clogged vent (fire risk) or control board failure. Call immediately.
Labor rate is flat. Parts are at cost plus markup. We quote everything BEFORE we start.

This is classic Whirlpool roller flat-spotting. The rubber rollers deform slightly when the drum sits in one position for a long time under load. After 10–15 minutes of running, the rollers round out and the sound usually fades. But it's an early warning — the rollers are past their prime. Flat spotting that returns means replacement time.
On Whirlpool, dark marks on clothes usually mean the front drum glides have worn through, and the bare metal drum edge is rubbing against the cabinet. Or the rear felt seal is gone. Either way — the drum surface is in contact with something it shouldn't be. Don't keep running it; the marks get worse and the drum edge can score the cabinet.
No — never use WD-40 or any oil on Whirlpool rollers. The roller bearings are sealed and self-lubricating. Any external lubricant will attract lint and dust, and cause the roller to seize within a few weeks. If they're noisy, they need replacement, not lubrication.
Most dryer repairs run $120–$220 total (labor + part). The most common issues — belt, rollers, heating element — are $20–$140 for the part and $80 for labor. We quote the exact price before we start, after diagnostics.
Depends on the machine. Here's how Dmitry looks at it:
Dryers are the most repair-friendly appliance out there. Parts are simple and cheap: belt $20, rollers $40, element $80, thermal fuse $15. They last for years — no sensitive electronics dying after three.
Real example: A Whirlpool 22 years old — replaced rollers twice at $40 each. Still runs. A Samsung 5 years old — control board failed, $400 repair. The old one was more reliable.
Exception: motor + board + element all at once on a 15+ year-old machine — we'll do the math together. If the repair exceeds $400 and the dryer is over 12 years old, sometimes a new one makes more sense.
Average repair: $150. New dryer: $700–$1,500 plus wait time. Full breakdown: repair vs. replace →

Yes, if the vent is clogged. Wet lint builds up → overheating → ignition. According to NFPA, roughly 2,900 dryer fires happen in the US every year.
We clean the vent duct free with every repair. If it's been a while — call us, we'll check it. Usually $80–$150 if it's just a cleaning with no repair.
70% of the time — yes, it's a clogged vent or flex hose. The element heats, but humid air can't escape. We check airflow with the analyzer.
The other 30%: moisture sensor or heating element running below capacity. The analyzer shows which one in under 5 minutes.
