The tell: motor hums, drum stays still. That's almost always the belt. No sound at all means something upstream — a thermal fuse or door switch.
Kenmore note: the first three digits of your model number tell us the actual maker — 110 = Whirlpool, 417 = Frigidaire/Electrolux, 796 = LG — and each uses a different belt. I carry all three. Which belt does my Kenmore use — Whirlpool or Frigidaire?
Check the first three digits of your model number: 110 = Whirlpool platform (4-ribbed belt), 417 = Frigidaire platform (different length and tension), 796 = LG. All three are in the van — just read me the three digits when you call and I'll confirm before I come.
Should I replace the rollers at the same time as the belt?
On a Kenmore that's 10+ years old — yes. The rollers are in the same assembly, so disassembling it again a year later costs another labor charge. A belt + roller + idler pulley kit is cheaper than two separate visits. On a newer machine I'll call it on-site.
The drum turns with a jerk — what is that?
Worn drum rollers — one side more than the other, causing the drum to drop and lurch. Don't ignore it: it will snap the belt and can bend the drum shaft.

Should I just buy a new dryer?

Dryers are the most repair-friendly appliance out there. Parts are simple and cheap: belt $20, rollers $40, element $80, thermal fuse $15. They last for years — no sensitive electronics dying after three.
Real example: A Whirlpool 22 years old — replaced rollers twice at $40 each. Still runs. A Samsung 5 years old — control board failed, $400 repair. The old one was more reliable.
Exception: motor + board + element all at once on a 15+ year-old machine — we'll do the math together. If the repair exceeds $400 and the dryer is over 12 years old, sometimes a new one makes more sense.
